Ok, im going to be building a htpc in the coming month, and id like to get some input from others. as far as linux experience, ive used suse, debian, and ubuntu. i dont always understand everything, but i can follow guides/wikis/tutorials pretty well.

i would also like this to serve as a file server.

my hardware will probably be as follows:
athlon64
Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS
onboard vga/svideo
1gb ram
hauppauge pvr-150 (x2)
120GB SATA (x2)

also, if you have any suggestions for hardware, let me know. the only thing i already own are the hard drives and tuners.

Yes, it just takes a converter. You can get a cheap geforce 5 or 6 with an svideo out though, probably better quality.

Do you already have the 6600? I think the 7xxx series has PureVideo support, whereas the 6xxx and lower are rumoured to have it, but I'm not sure. Check to see :)

I've had mythtv working with knoppmyth, gentoo, and ubuntu. If you just want something to work right away, then go for knoppmyth. It's pretty limited after that though, but you can install extras of course too. For ease of setup I'd probably say go with ubuntu. There are some good guides for it.

I got it working with Fedora and can't imagine it would be any harder on Ubuntu. For me, it was a little bit too much. I really just wanted to watch tv, schedule some recordings, and maybe stream a live feed over to a different computer. MythTV pretty much throws in everything but the kitchen sink for HTPCs though, and pretty much takes over your computer when it is running. For a lot of people with a dedicated HTPC in their living room or whatever, that is probably good for them, but I didn't like it. I decided VLC Media Player was better suited to my needs.

I'm going to build an HTPC soon. I'm most likely going to use Suse since yast has a place where you can easily add new tv cards.
