Hey everyone, I thought I'd join the AT seti team since I don't do that much with my computer anyways. Well I set-up seti to run, but I wanted to know how I could make it so that it only runs when my screen saver is on. I don't really want it running while I'm playing games etc. Also, How do I get that annoying command prompt that says transmitting blah blah to go away?

Sounds like you downloaded the command-line version; I use the GUI version and set it as the screensaver. If you do that, set it to blank the screen (click the Settings button when SETI is selected as the screensaver). This way, SETI@Home will devote its full processing power to actually analyzing the signal, not for making the nifty graphics.
I think there was a screensaver written by someone here that would run the command-line version as a screensaver, but I had some problems with it - specifically, when I would move the mouse or hit a key to get rid of the screensaver and use the computer, it would all leave the screen, but the list of processes still showed that the SETI commandline was in fact still running.

A lot of people use the SETIDriver utility to hide the command-line client, but you could also run the screensaver-specific version of SETI, it's just not nearly as fast. Welcome to the Team, and here is some more info including links to the SETIDriver if you want to try it out: SETI FAQ

so is there a way to use the CLI version but only when the screensaver is running? According to the FAQ, I shouldn't use the GUI verison unless the CLI one doesn't work.

I think in your situation it would be best to use the GUI (screensaver) version. If you want to optomize it for maximum efficiency then you can set it to switch to no-graphics mode after a few minutes (the graphic display takes some of the CPU time).

If you set the Gui Seti screensaver to go blank in "0" (zero) minutes then you will in effect have a blank screen screensaver that runs seti.
It's not quite as fast the Cli but this way it wont waste any cycles drawing the graphics.

There was a Duplexing Screensaver that kmmatney made, however the download link is no longer valid 🙁

I will send him a PM, and ask him to give input to this thread, if he still has it somewhere 🙂

Confused

My personal recomendation is to run the CLI version with Seti Driver and maunaly turn it off when you want to play games and such. I have a .scr file that automaticaly starts setiDriver but I dont believe that it will shut it off.

I have a program "the duplexing screensaver" that will run any program alongside a normal screensaver (or blank screen). It works great with the SETI cli program, as long as you don't use SETI Driver. I use it for a lot of machines at work, where even the slightest cpu usage from a distributed program causes trouble. The single file installation is at:

TeamAnandtech Screen Saver Duplexor

It works with all operating systems now (it originally had trouble in Win98).

To use install it, and select "TeamAnadtech" in the screen saver window in display properties. Select "Options" to set the file to your SETI CLI.

The program is written in VB, and anyone can have the source code (PM me)

Kevin
