Distributed Computing in the trade journals

Jesse Berst has included some mainstream info about Distributed Computing. If it becomes "palatable" to the big boys in the glass offices, maybe I can resume my company herd.

I can only hope. Check it out:

__________BERST ALERT____________________
NO ALIEN IDEA: HOW DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING WILL CHANGE THE WEB

http://cgi.zdnet.com/slink?/adeskb/adt1227/2667710:11599548

For years, distributed computing has gotten the
attention of academics and alien seekers. No more.
Now that Wall Street has noticed, distributed computing
is about to change the way the Web is organized.

I took a quick look at the article and found it dated. The OGR section pointed to the previous OGR effort (of which I was a proud supporter). I found no mention of DNet and RC5, at least not the prominent mention it deserves.

I read through all those responses.....a lot of paranoid people out there, and some real naive ones too!

<< If information is 'distributed' across many small systems, there will have to be some kind of massive directory structure tying all of these systems together. Can you say "Needle in a haystack". >>

This guy never heard of Napster. 😱

<< Imagine the cost savings if a highly-efficient way to distribute computing power were in place. It's mind-boggling to think about! >>

Hmmmm, this guy is getting the idea!! 😀

<< What happens to your system if the hard drive is running 24x7? You know what happens to servers when they get hammered all day long. >>

She doesn't know the difference between disk I/O and processing. 😕

<< Your particular application must be suited to the multithreaded, distributed computing model for this to work. If it isn't, this style of computing will not help you out. You must also consider the network bandwidth needed for geographically disbursed threads. >>

This guy calls himself a computer consultant. :Q

<< Worms - bugs - trojans - viruses - and I am going to give them access to my computer when I am not using it?? I don't think so. >>

Paranoid
:disgust:

Joe worked on the earlier OGR effort?
/me didn't know that!
