Distorted screen

For some months now I've had a strange issue where my screen becomes distorted when viewing mp4 files sometimes. I'm pretty sure it's only happened with mp4 files. The problem seems to be lot more common on webpages. After I've fixed the issue I would always go back to see what file was playing by viewing the source, every time it's been mp4. I understand mp4 files are just containers but it doesn't seem to happen on other file types such as flash/flv that I've noticed anyway.

It doesn't lock up my PC when it happens, most of the time I can just press alt+f4 to close the browser which then fixes the issue. Although it will happen again when viewing a mp4 file until I reset my PC. Sometimes pressing alt+f4 won't fix the issue but I can still see the cursor on my secondary monitor.

This has happened to me on Win7,8.1,10. I've tried changing my graphic drivers for my Radeon 280x but that didn't seem to help. I've tried checking my ram with memtest86+ which seems fine.

Any ideas?

sounds like bad video memory, but you could do a windows wipe to rule out a freakishly bad driver install.

Thanks for the reply JeffMD, I really hate doing a wipe because of all the programs I have installed but if there's a good chance it's my video card I do have an old spare I could try for while.

It could be bad video-decode hardware in the GPU ASIC. Happened to a friend of mine with his 780G IGP. He cannot enable HW accel for videos.

Use a different mp4 player and see what happens?

Does it happen with different browsers?

I guess I could turn off HW accel in firefox, not sure if that would completely turn it off for every video that gets played in firefox. I'll probably just put in old spare video card I have. It just sucks doing that though, because I'll have to use it for long time to be sure that's the problem. I can go weeks or longer without this issue popping up, then sometimes it just happens a lot more often.

I went ahead and emailed XFX to see what they have to say about it.

It happens in firefox and chrome. It's also happened a few times playing mp4 video files on my PC using a media player such as potplayer.

Thanks for the replies.
