Recently, my laptop display started showing lines (dotted and ascii text) down the screen, inverted colors, and weird pixels. Also, when playing games such as world of warcraft, there would be flashing polygons all over (as if it was overclocked too high). It just happened all of a sudden, no magnetic field or anything to screw it up.
I ran the laptop output to another monitor and it showed the same stuff, so its most likely a issue with the graphics chip. The problem is the graphics chip is an ATI mobility 9700 in a discrete one chip w/ram solution that is soldered onto the mainboard. The laptop is a barebones that I put together myself more than three years ago, so the warranty is long expired. The manufacturer of the laptop is AOpen. I contacted the reseller where I bought the barebones and they mentioned it will cost quite alot to have it repairedwith AOpen (estimation + parts + repairs fee).
Anyways, I have already began putting together my new replacement laptop, but I still hope to try to fix my old one as I have pretty much identified the problem and all the other components are still good. What else should I try to do/can do? I'm not sure if AOpen can just sell me a replacement mainboard, which would have been the best route if it was at a reasonable price.
