So tomorrow I'm going to dissect a fox with some 8th graders. I've studied biology, but I've never dissected a fox. So any word of advice from fox hunters or others with experience in this area?

I'm going to wear rubber gloves and I will try not to cut into the bowels.

Not much of a difference from any other commonly dissected animals in lab. If you have to "try" not to accidentally cut into the bowels, you've not practiced much. I've gutted plenty of deer, and have yet to cut into anything I didn't want to.

Big difference between preserved animals and freshly killed ones. The innards are all sucked together and decompressed, somewhat hardened and dry, and normal anatomy is somewhat distorted in preserved animals. Recently killed animals, lots of air in the bowels, everything retains its elasticity, and the bowels slip around nicely. Occasionally, surgeons cut into the bowels on live people, too (I've seen it).

I've butchered quite a few different kinds of animals but, preserved ones give me the willies. I guess it's the smell. Animals shouldn't smell like that. Brrrrrhrr!

So it all went very well. I also dissected a crow. The students enjoyed it a lot. Found out that foxes eat apples when it's winter.

Well, considering Fox is full of a bunch of conservative Obama-haters, I hope you sent permission slips home to all the liberal parents first...
