Not fake. If I remember rightly (which I may very well not, my sources were far from official), Ford looked into this technology when designing the Mark VIII, but deemed it too unreliable for series production and did not extend a contract to the company that made it.

It's a very interesting idea, but I can definitely see issues with reliability.
