dispose of old ANY BRAND computers and peripherals safely : FREE in MOST areas or get Gift Certificates & Coupons for it

if you are willing to drive your stuff to the nearest state sponsored location to safely dispose of your computers, monitors, peripherals like keyboards, mice, batteries, etc. as well as floppies and cd's. check out EPA

here is the EPA link for NJ residents, there is a drop down menu to select your state:

EPA tells you how to dispose of your computer's in an economical way for free, if it is unusable. I know NJ has state sponsored recycling programs. Some states require you to pay to dispose safely, but it's such a nominal fee. It's worth it. You can check how, here.

Usable Computers?, then you may want to donate them somewhere for a tax write off.

don't want to drive out, want someone to pick up your equipment for you instead?

Then HP is your answer, they send a truck to your house to pick up your equipment, and they reimburse you the nominal recycling fees they charge you with up to $50 in gift certificates at HPShopping.com (which offers students a special pricing for many items)

HP E coupon for recycling

if you want 10% off at Dell, then don't pay anything except for about 10 bucks or so to ship your goodies to a nearby Dell location (they're everywhere) - and you get a 10% off coupon for your efforts : Dell's recycling program

🙂😉🙁😱:disgust:😀:|:Q😛😎:frown:😕

Nothing in my state. Bummer. I have an old Epson Equity II+ (286) that I couldn't giveaway free but I hate chucking functional stuff in the trash.

LOL, Donate gosh. I remember I donate my car for like 2 years ago and every year some junk yard email me saying they have my car and I can go pick it up when I pay my fee. LOL 😀 We have some funny people. I donated it to Salvation Army. It still runs and work great. Just have some electrical problems. Wires are getting bad. I miss that car.

The EPA is crazy. They don't even consider shooting your old monitors with a shotgun to be an acceptable form of disposal.

Thanks Fobio, I've been planning to go dump my PC at the Shady Grove waste center in Maryland, but I see here there are some organizations that could actually use the stuff. I kept all my old PC's, 486/66 DX2 with VESA Local Bus, lol; a few Pentium I's.

It's OT but for TTM77, you got to be careful. I remembered when I was in college, I donated my old car and forget about it until 6 years later. When I was buying a house, there was an entry in my credit record from some junk yard that charged me for storage for all those years and we have to fight it off.
And yes, I remembered receiving some kind of 'junk' mail asking me to pay for the storage of that car earlier ...

Machines are refurbished at the rate of 225 computers per week with the help of inmates from two correctional institutions.

This is what it says for my state. Make sure you read the fine print and take out the HDD.

Hey, the Dell recycling deal is pretty good... get a 10% off software and peripherals coupon, and according to their site, the coupon can be used in combination with other deals. Of course, it all depends on how much shipping is to see if it's worth it. Not worth paying $10 to get a 10% off $50 order...

it's nice to bring attention to something like this... wish i could say i believe in distributed computing as much as i believe in recycling... it COULD be doing some good, but right now i think it's so in development it could quite possibly be more of a waste of electricity than anything else?...

bump* 😉

It seems Dell will only pick-up up to 3 computers a year for recycling/reusing.

Is there any other company that will take more than that without having to pay a fee to pick up?

for those who used dell...

how long does it to get a response from them?

I filled out their form, and they said they will contact me thru email, but they haven't yet. I filled it out on Thursday.

Before you do any of this, you might list your PCs in FS/FT -- now that PCs are so fast and are running DOS-hostile Win XP, some people are wanting to pair a $35 KVM switch with an old 286 / 386 / 486 / p1 box for DOS, MAME, and/or Win95 games that don't run well or at all on modern PCs. Reuse is even better than recycling.

The same with ancient games: you might not ever want to play Wing Commander 1-2, Ultima Underworld or Blake Stone again, but someone out there does.

We really need a "games recycling center" too, to collect, warehouse, and re-distribute all the out-of-print games that people are tossing into the trash.
