I have a bunch of carpet tack strips left over after I took out the carpet in my new house, and I also have some wood trim left over. Can someone tell me what I can do with it? The strips and the trim all have nails sticking out from them, so I can't just throw them out with the trash. Thoughts?

Go to your county's website and look up the county dump or just look up the nearest garbage dump.

sure u can... bundle them up with as many nails inward as possible in reasonable size bundles (less than 5' long), wrap with a couple thicknesses of newspaper where nails stick out... i've also just stuffed some reasonable number in a trashcan after breaking them into trashcan sized pieces...

just think about how the guy picking them up has to handle them as you make bundles...

am assuming no truck and dump...

Dare I say...more than 10 lbs? ;)

Indeed. Might I suggest bulk pickup?

Maybe call up a local scrap metal place and see if they'll take em? No idea if it's a good idea or a stupid one.

We got a dumpster, got rid of the carpet + tackstrip + misc other crap all in one shot.. The dumpster is actually cheaper than going to a landfill in our area.

I would hope that the trash guys would be wearing some heavy duty gloves, at least.

Break them up into sections several feet long, and bundle them up with duct tape, keeping the tacks facing inward.

If you're still concerned, maybe tape a paper to it that'll let the pickup guy know that the bundle might have nails sticking out.

How about throw them away?

Or take them to the dump if you're concerned about just tossing them.

Those tack strips are nasty, I haven't gotten rid of mine, but I'm just going to tape them to each other inwards so that no one gets poked with rusty nails.

We did something similar to this... Taped them, and rolled them up in the old carpet strips

Wrap them in a piece of that carpet you just removed and stick them in a big trash bag.

Put it in the trash. If it's too much to go at once, divide up for multiple pickups. or, for a small fee, haul the lot to your local landfill.

heh anyone wonder why he's asking the question about carpet strips but hasnt mentioned what he did with the carpet he removed? seems to me that would be a bigger issue than the carpet strips. my answer- do the same with the strips as you did with the removed carpet and if you've already tossed it, why didnt you toss them out together?

For $45 I got a guy that came to the house that recycles carpet and foam padding. He doesn't take tack strips though.

After this many responses, I'll just go ahead and leave it for the trash guys. Obviously that's more common than I thought.

For the way my trash gets picked up, I just toss damned near anything in the barrel since the trash people never actually get out of the truck anyways.
