Disposable DVDs a tough sell

My favorite part:

Pellegrino said he hasn't seen one customer purchase an EZ-D, though some of them have been shoplifted out of the store.

"The good thing is that they tear them out of the packages and they don't realize that they've started (the EZ-D's) disintegration," he said.

LMAO! $7/dvd? Of course they aren't fvcking selling. I rent new releases at $4.10 from hollywood video, and driving them back on the way to work is not worth saving $3 to get some pissant selection from a grocery store. Screw them.

heh, I didn't even know they were out, and I usually am up to date on stuff like this...but seriously, $7 for something that you can't use for more than two days? I'd rather go to the theater and get the full experience.

I rent movies for 49 cents for 5 days rental from the grocery store. No way I'll pay $7 for just two days rental - I'm going to the grocery store anyways so no harm in bringing back an old movie.

In that article there was a funny quote. "Environmental groups have vigorously protested the EZ-D since it was first introduced. In August, volunteers staged a phone protest and dialed Disney CEO Michael Eisner to complain about the product. The Texas Campaign for the Environment has also mailed over 1,000 postcards to Eisner and local retailers to urge them to stop selling the EZ-D. "

Isn't mailing 1000 postcards in vain an environmental waste?

good for who? they are getting shopliffted

Good for us, this format will fail and DRM will be struck another blow. DVD is here to stay.

WTF? Is this a joke? $7 bucks and only 2 days to watch? I can rent at the Hollywood Video that is conveniently located on my route between home and work for only $3.79 for 5 days and it's no hassle at all returning them. And for ~$15 I could own a real DVD "forever".
Wow... the marketing idiot who came up with this one is a real loser...

That's the whole point, actually. The goal was to have DVDs available for "rent" in ANY store, AND you don't have to return them.

But for $7 I (and most people, I bet) would just as soon take their chances with a late fee.

If I was in a store and I could get a disposable DVD for $2, I'd probably do it every so often and save myself a trip to the video store.

This already failed once when it was Divx.

Oh how I will enjoy them failing again. 🙂 I love when companies lose money over inane concepts like this that somehow everybody on board thought was brilliant

Die!!!! Muuuhahahahhahah

I'd use them if they were a dollar a piece. No way in hell am I going to waste $7 on a DVD that lasts two days when I can buy a regular DVD for $14 that will last longer than I will.

remember that producing one of these DVDs costs just as much, or more than, a normal DVD. figure the rest out yourself.
