I've been looking at the Dell Inspiron 8600 and i can't decide between which moniter I should get. I've been debating whether the UXGA is worth the additional $100. On my desktop i use 1600x1200 resolution on a 19" and i don't know how useful 1920x1200 would really be on a display of that size. Any input would be of use. thanks ahead of time

$100 additional isn't much for a new system. I'd go for it with that low of a difference. Unlike other components, it's really difficult getting an upgraded screen so you might be kicking yourself a few months down the road. Font sizes are of non issue once you set them in your preferences. A sharp high density screen really does wonders if you spend a lot of time on the system.

Are there any other laptop vendors that have a 15.4 widescreen display w/ that resolution? I've looked at a lotta different vendors lately and i just can't seem to get everything that i want in those that i can in the dell. if you guys know of any other vendors that i can get all this in please let me know

Pentium M 1.7
UXGA or SXGA+
512MB RAM (1 or 2 dimm is fine since i'm not really planning on upgrading it)
128MB ATI's MOBILITY® RADEON? 9600 PROTURBO (best dell had...but minimum requirement)
24x cd-rw/dvd (no need for a dvd burner so i wanna keep this part down)
60 GB HDD @7.2k rpm
wireless b/g

hi lazy... welcome to AT

I have a 8500 with a 15.4 inch SVGA+ screen (1680 X 1050) and i personally love the screen. UXGA, i havent seem + cud nt afford....

If it helps, here is a snapshot from my desktop... http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/Abhi/desktop.jpg

If you opt for a UXGA, everything will be smaller, but you can get even more stuff onto the screen...

WSXGA+ is the way to go, for me, that is.
It all depends on your eyesight. SXGA+ is like the "middle." XGA is for if you cant see too well. UXGA is for people with great eyesight. It's your choice.

well i was originally thinking of the uxga because i run 1600x1200 at home but later on i thought about how much smaller the display on the laptop would be so i got to thinking that sxga+ would be sufficient and questioning whether the uxga worth spending the extra $100

You have UXGA on a 19 inch, right? Try to imagine running that on a 15.4 inch (i8600). If you think you can see it clearly, then its worth it. If you can't, its a waste.

If you can afford it then go with the WUXGA. It is worth it. If you are not used to hi res (i.e small fonts) it may take time to get used to it but it is worth it. It should be a similar LCD to my friends D800 with WUXGA which is sweet and the text is very readable in my opinion.
