Displaying links archived threads

I was trying to post a link to an archived thread. It would only work if I put "&arctab=arc" after it. Is there a reason for this? Non-archived threads don't need it, so if I post a linked thread without "&arctab=arc" in it, it will no longer work when the linked thread gets archived.
