Display Woes

Friend has this issue, I am stumped:
"Periodically and frequently, with no explanation, the montior with shut off for a second, then reapppear, with the background colors dsiplayed like a negative image. Later it does the same thing, only reappearing with normal color display. There is no rhyme or reason, no patterns to the intervals and it happens whether I am actively surfing, gaming, or not.
I have downloaded current drivers from nVidia's site, but no solution.
info: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT, knockoff 19" CRT"

I suggested it is his monitor and a problem with sleep/turnoff but not sure if I am missing something. Everest shows his GPU temp to be 51-celcius so I discounted any heat issues.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a loose cable to me. Make sure he checks that all connections are snug.

If not, then it's probably something wrong with the monitor.
