Display troubles with Radeon

I recently bought a retail ATI Radeon 32MB DDR for my Samsung 950p 19" monitor. After I installed the card, my machine booted up in 640X480 16 (not 16-bit) color mode. Yuck!!! I quickly installed the drivers from the CD and rebooted. It doesn't work! Whenever I try to change my resolution and color depth, I'm prompted with a dialog box that asks me to restart my machine so it can make the "necessary" changes. I told my computer to change display settings on the fly, so this puzzles me. Anyway, after I restart I get a blue screen error message that reads "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted." I reboot and get the stardard Windows Me Startup Menu due to an improper shutdown. I continue booting in normal mode, and while Windows is loading I get a display error that says my driver aren't working. I end up back in low res/color, and everything I do to fix the problem fails. I've reinstalled both my adapter and monitor drivers from their CDs and the web. Nothing! I'm not a windows expert. I've used Macs most of my life (they don't pull this kind of crap :| ), so I need some help. :(

What CPU & Motherboard do you have, did you remove the old drivers from the old card first?I would try a clean install of OS & try again.

Duron 800 on a MSI KT7 Pro2-A. I had a ATI Rage 128 before a got my new Radeon. It came with my old system and I used it because I need to save some money. I NEED to fix this problem soon. I got all these A titles over christmas that I HAVE to play. I'll try a clean install. I hope it works.

Don`t forget to install the Via 4 in 1 drivers first(straight after clean install of OS, then video & sound card drivers etc afterwards.

Don't forget, the Radeon drivers will overwrite your Via 4-1's unless you tell them not to and install an older AGP file. I suggest installing the Radeon drivers, selecting no when it prompts you to restart the computer, and then immediately installing the Via 4-1's. I had had severe problems with any radeon drivers before trying that. GL

So I should do things in this order? Clean install, ATI drivers, Via drivers, pray. I'll give it a go.
