Hey all, I could use some help.
E8400
Gigabyte P35-D3SL
8800GT
PCPC 610silencer
I built this PC roughly 2 months ago. It has been flawless up until this past weekend. While playing a videogame a vertical band roughly 1 inch wide appeared on my monitor roughly 2 inches from the left hand side. That band was of the "kalediscope" nature meaning it still displayed the image but the colors were changed to something psychadelic looking. The PC did not crash or beep and within 10 seconds reverted back to normal.
- It has since happened maybe 3-5 more times. It appears with no rhyme or reason and goes away in the same manner.
- I have tried several times taking a screenshot of the problem. Each time I get the screengrab and view it the bar does not appear. In other words the screenshot is clean.
- The problem comes and goes at weird times and doesnt appear to be anything heat related. Sometimes it happens when my PC is idle at the desktop, sometimes it happens when im gaimg.
What have I done so far:
- My first step was to test a different videocard. I replaced my EVGA8800GT with a superclocked EVGA 8800GT and the problem was still present. I checked temps, seatings, connections and all that, it appears the videocard is fine.
- My next step is to test out a different monitor and DVI cable.
- If the problem persists I will assume it is a mobo problem. maybe a defective PCIE slot?
What do I think is wrong:
- Im leaning towards the problem being either my monitor or the dvi cable connecting the two.
- For starters I find it curious the screengrab doesnt capture the display problem. If it was somethign on the mobo/videocard I would think the actual image itself was corrupt and a screengrab would capture it.
- I have seen both LCD monitors and TVs with similar display problems,
- Also, there is no rhyme or reason to the occurences. If there was soemthign to make me think it was heat related, or 3D related I would maybe feel otehrwise.
- Finally, while It is a new PC the monitor and cable being used are both almost 5 years old. Its a classic Dell 2001fp, 20.1inch LCD.
Am I on the right track here? Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thank for the help to whoever takes time to reply.
