Display problem when changing drivers

Hello- I need help please with a display problem. When I try to go to advanced settings on my nVidia GTS2 card I get the following ? An error occurred while windows was working with Control Panel file C;\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DESK.CPL ?
This has happened after I changed the video drivers . With Det 6.49;6.50 and 11.0. Each time I changed the drivers I did it properly, ie went to standard vga then loaded the new drivers.
I am using Windows ME and it is a direct mail system with a recovery disc as opposed to the Windows ME cd.
Can anyone explain in simple terms how to fix this please?
