dispaly port and HDMI

I have a new LCD with a display port. I have a laptop with an HDMI output.

I thought I could connect the two from what I read pre-purchase.

The LCD came with a cable that connects to the display port and has a USB attachment on the other end. Is this of any value or is it garbage?

What do I need to buy? A link to a product would be appreciated.

Sounds like a DisplayLink adapter (is that what they called them?). Essentially a graphics adapter (not accelerator since it needs the CPU to render stuff on the screen) that works via USB. It's not garbage and it could be useful, so keep it.

A passive DP-HDMI adapter should be less than $20 or so and should be enough for most resolutions.
