The company lost $4.7 billion in the latest quarter, but also reported that Disney+ has about 60.5 million subscribers after nine months of operation.

this is on top of the monthly Disney+ membership. 😱

the movie was scheduled for release in theaters worldwide in March but was postponed several times due to the pandemic.
It premieres Sept 4.

lets see how many people will balk at that price for a movie.

Whether it'll succeed or not I'm not sure, but the wife is probably going to bite on this. $30 vs. $50-$60 in a movie theater for my family of 4 is typically what we would've spent in the theaters to watch this, so it's justified. We'd also be in the comfort of our home, with just us and not the usual BS that comes along with going to the theaters. But I have a hard time paying for a sub, then renting a movie on same sub for 3x more than what the sub is per month.
 
I'll be honest... I only have Disney+ because American Express Platinum cards were given a benefit of $20 towards streaming services due to the pandemic.

The moment that credit ends (end of the year) is the moment I cancel Disney+

Lol... Hollywood is funny.

Seeing a movie shouldn't be a $30 ordeal. This is why standard movie theaters are falling apart, and new style ones with a full-restaurant menu + bar are succeeding
 
Disney+ did this with Onward and I believe it was $20 but after like a week or two it was included for free with the Disney+ subscription.

I wonder if this will be the same deal.

Well, they keep building them 😛

Personally found it to be a much better model because it depended less on ticket sales (which are mostly something that movie theaters literally can't profit off of), and instead centers on having some decent food + alcoholic beverages.

Also makes the theaters less of a clown circus with (generally) less kids in attendance.... Which, I won't step foot in a normal movie theater anymore... Too many kids, dirty seats, smelly theater, sticky floors, etc...

I know and I think they're nuts but a combination of circumstances made it keep happening even though they often fail.

Overall the best operator in this category is Alamo and they have more success than most since they've got a defined brand with probably the best value for product in the segment.

I used to get those offers all the time and generally lol'd at the card because the incentives were kinda garbage at the time. Those bonuses are neat, but wouldn't be worth it for me, alone.

I'd like another AMEX card (cancelled my only one about 6 years ago), but I haven't seen one that I liked with reasonable benefits, and I like to keep my "expensive" cards limited to 1 right now, which is currently Sapphire Preferred....but I'm probably downgrading that early next year before the new increased fee hits me
 
I could see ten or 20 bucks for a new release on a paid streaming service, but 30 bucks seems just too steep.
Yes, it would cost that to go to a theater for a family of 4, but you get a better experience in a theater as well.

The annual fee is $550.

When combined with
-Sign-on Bonus of 50k to 100k points (thatt's $500 - $1000 right there)
-Points for every purchase (nothing amazing, since all cards have this)
-$100 to Global Entry/TSA Pre-check once every 5 years
-$200 airline "incidental" credit every year

It can often even-out with the annual fee. I mean, with these $20 to Cell-phone coverage, that's another $120. If you value the streaming stuff, that's another $120. I'm probably forgetting about some of the others.

Right now I'm really laying low with the credit card churning game - especially because I'm not doing any traveling right now.

I am getting $40/month in credits like posted above, $200 in airline travel credit already used up (booked initial flights, then itinerary changes to higher demand/priced flights worked for that), $300 in Global Entry credits (authorized users also qualify), and $15/month ($35 in December) in Uber Eats credits, plus $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credits in two semi-annual pieces (I bought wife perfume that was the same price as elsewhere anyway that she really liked). Plus I snagged 70k bonus points on sign up. So I am ahead on the annual fees already. They are supposedly getting picky on new cards, but I got it after the supposed pullback. I was 820 of 850 FICO rougly with $145k in personal income, $185k joint on application. So it went through without isses.

That's right, forgot about the Saks and UberEats.

I used the UberEats a lot more when I had 2 platinum cards and got $30 off.

$15 barely covers the fees =/


Saks is a pain in the ass because the store is so far away from me.... but twice now I've gone in just to buy a $50 gift card.

$20/month credit only means $120? Is that only good for half a year, or is that a maximum annual credit?

hmmm, not bad, really, stacking with streaming as well. (I assume this is for all streaming charged to the card, right, not just one account?)

Didn't realize they also do Global entry--I haven't received a mailer in like 4 years, so maybe it was added to compete? That's not bad...it also reminds me that I need to do mine quick with the VISA, if I am going to downgrade before next ~April.

I recall the AMEX points being...mostly junk overall, and certainly compared to VISA Ultimate Rewards. Is that still true? Still, for just straight up cash, that isn't terrible, but I assume the 1-3 month purchase requirements are really nuts to earn that? I'm not a huge spender as it is....but hey, I might need to make some big one-time home purchases soon, so it might work.

It's only good "halfway through the year" because AMEX enacted it in response to COVID.... So it's not a normal promotion.

That's why I calculated @ $120 - I think they enacted it around June - so just took 6 months * 20. They Already said that this is a COVID thing, so they will likely not be continuing these after December.

As far as AMEX points being junk... I have a general personal problem with booking points for travel for "maximum value".. I've been told with things like Chase Ultimate Reward Points, AMEX Membership Rewards points, etc... that the best course of action to use the points is to book travel through them... but I haven't experienced that personally. For me (with AMEX) I use a Platinum Schwab card that gives me a cash-out at 1.25 cents per point. Cash is king for me - because I can find budget flights, hotels with corporate discount codes, etc...

Yes - and actually, there is a way to convert the "streaming credit" to Amazon gift-card... There is a way to "gift" yourself a streaming audio book or something similar, then cancelling it and sending yourself a credit for it.

But other than that, all your standard streaming stuff applies... Netflix... Disney+, Amazon, etc..
 
I mean, compared to other streaming options and rental options it seems outrageous but $30 is essentially two non-matinee tickets, no refreshments. A new release likely wouldn't have matinee pricing for at least a week or two downshift on your market. So you can see a new release in your home for the cost of two tickets.

Probably what throws me off the most is that you can literally buy a movie and watch it over and over for 20.

If all it takes is waiting a bit.... Fuck it?
