Analog

In a perfect example of a big media company looking to capitalize on current events, The Walt Disney Company has trademarked “Seal Team 6,” which also happens to be the name of the elite special forces team that killed Osama Bin Laden. The trademark applications came on May 3rd, two days after the operation that killed Bin Laden… and two days after “Seal Team 6″ was included in thousands of news articles and TV programs focusing on the operation.
Disney’s trademark applications for “Seal Team 6″ cover clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and “entertainment and education services,” among other things.
You can read the actual applications here, here and here.
Of course, for all we know Disney has been working on an animated feature about a team of anthropomorphic seals in search of adventure, but given the timing of the application that seems… unlikely.

From what I understand the OBL operation was top secret and you won't be seeing anyone write a book about it any time soon.

LOL. Wrong. People will write books.

Now, people who were actually a part of the operation will not write books. 😛

fvck. another simple idea eluded me. i shouldve trademarked it. oh well. Seal Team 7 is mine. try to make a sequel now bitches

Clearly, you are unfamiliar with modern marketing. Seal Team 6: Bin Laden's Revenge, Seal Team 6: Delta Force, Seal Team 6: Call of Duty, Seal Team 6: Reach, and so on. I smell a new FPS franchise already. 😛

How in the Hell can a company Trademark a Military Unit and their patches etc?
that would be like Boeing Trademarking VFA-105 Gunslingers.. or VFA-84 Jolly Rogers and all the squadron gear etc. that likeness and all associated with it already belong to the US Military Dept of the Navy in this case.. what kinda court allowed this?

Sweet.. does this mean Disney is going to use their team to hunt down and kill all the evil witches in the stories they tell? 😛

LOL WHY ARE WE MAKING STUFF UP? WRONG. See? I can do that too.

You know damn well I was talking about the people who were involved with the operation and actually know what they are talking about. No wonder your life is a measly pile of scum.

uh, trademarks don't go through courts

they go through our wonderful and totally awesome patent and trademark office

True. But I have a feeling that something like this wouldn't stand up very well if challenged in court. Who knows if it would even make it through the TM application process? Just because they filed a TM application, doesn't mean automatic granting of the trademark.

I understand this... but still the courts settle any disputes etc.. being that Military Unit names and patches official or unofficial in this case still belong to the Dept of Defense I dont see how this is possible still.

WTF fuck disney.

hope the military challenges them on this. they shouldn't be able to trade mark that.

This just in: the United States Navy has released a statement detailing the name change of the now famous "Seal Team Six," responsible for the take-own of Osama Bin Laden, to "Mickey You're Next." More at 11.

this sounds like bullshit.

but are people really expecting members of the team to write books or try to get movies made? I know everyone's all about the money, but talk about painting a giant target on the backs of themselves, their family, and everyone they know.
