I have 3 hard drives in my computer, 80GB 7200 Maxtor, 80GB 7200 WD, and 40GB 5400 Maxtor.
Having trouble with one of the partitions on the Maxtor 7200 80GB.... on startup, windows says that drive M may have developed errors and starts its through scan disk routine... (it's a 20GB partition). Since I really don't care about the data on that partition, and at the rate windows disk scan goes through the drive, is there a way to avoid the 20 hours that it'll take windows to completely scan the surface? I've let it go a few times, but inevitably, the kids hit a key or the cat or someone, and the scan is stopped before it completes.

Do I need to let windows completely scan the surface?
Should I just use the Maxtor software to fix or diagnose the problem?

Thanks.

"Should I just use the Maxtor software to fix or diagnose the problem?" No if the problem is with a Seagate drive you should DL the Seagate tool and run it. And/or you should figure out why your machine isn't shutting down/restarting properly.

Edit: Now that a looked over your post again ("I have 3 hard drives in my computer, 2 80GB 7200, and 1 40GB 5400. Seagate, WD, Seagate. ") and mine, why would you run any Maxtor software if you have two Seagate drives and a WD drive?????

Oh duhhhh, I had just been reading a couple of articles on one of the Seagate drives and accidentally typed in "seagate"... I'll have to edit that...

Heh ok. Yes you should run your manufacturer's utilities on the drive.
