Disk read error

I came home from work the other day and sat down to check my email. I noticed everything was running slow so I rebooted my system to get a clean boot. That is when I started the disk read error.

My system is on 24/7 and always have been. I went thru the bios and found nothing wrong that I could see. The bios will see the drive just fine. So I pulled the drive and put in my second system to see if I could get into the files on it. No luck. It will see the drive but can't get into the files. The icon for the drive looks like a cd drive icon under my computer.

The drive is a wetern digital wd1600 and I am running xp pro on it.

Any one with suggestions on how to get in?

Thanks

Bill

You don't say if it's pata or sata. Have you tried booting off the cd and using the repair console? Have you tried moving it to another port? What about checking the cables and replacing them? Have you tried another drive to make sure yours hasn't gone south? What about taking your drive to another machine? Your controller might have gone bad.

This is a pata drive.

I booted of the windows cd and tried the recovery console. Am running the chkdsk right now. It is hung at 8%.

As stated above I placed into my second rig and can still not access it. I just set it up as a slave. Took my cd drive out, which worked fine, and put this drive in.

Am thinking drive failure.
