Disk Read Error? Computer Help Needed ASAP!

One of my computers here at home seems to have a problem. Every time I turn it on, it has a DISK READ ERROR and asks me to hit control alt delete to restart. It will not load Windows XP at all. I have no idea what happened or why, and I need some help as to what I need to do to get this fixed. It's a P4 1.6A with an Asus P4B266 motherboard, 512MB ram. The hard drive is an 80GB Maxtor. I have never had any problems with this, and I really have no idea what's going on. HELP?

There isn't like a floppy in the drive is there? And when you try to load XP from CD does it at least get as far as trying to load, where you can try to format? Or not even that far at all.

I can put the XP cd in, hit ESC and have it, load my DVD-ROM and the Windows XP cd starts and works, what now?

Well, if you have another computer (assuming you do) you can put the drive in there, slave it and copy stuff over (providing you can read from it at all)

I have no idea how to do that and the other 2 computers are DELL (does that matter or can you do it no matter what?)....

Where do I put the jumper to set it to slave? I can't access it at all on the other computer so why should it be diff. here? I will attempt it tho 🙂

Well if you can't slave it, or access it through the other computer like that it is pretty certain that the drive itself is bad. If you just take the jumper off it is on slave by default. If it doesn't work out that way, go to the maxtor site and download the maxblast and do the tes tand then call support and get it replaced

I got onto XP with both hooked up, but when I try to access the other Hard Drive it says it needs to be formatted...?

Yup I would say it would be a good idea to use the maxblast utility as it will be best be able to tell you what is going on with the drive and if its still under warenty you can send them the drive with the error code it gives you and they will send you a replacement 🙂
