Disk IO benchmark

I finally got my Adaptec 31605 raid controller working. It is 3 500GB seagate sata drives in a raid 5 setup with a 256KB strip size.

what kind of software do you use for disk io benchmarks?

What are some good numbers I should be looking at? Would adding more drives to the array speed things up?

thanks in advance.

iometer.

Run it from common stripe sizes say 32KB through 256KB or as high as your controller supports. Stripe sizes < 32KB usually don't do well on the desktop.

Just an FYI the machine feels more sluggish with a controller than without. It could just be my imagination, but thats why we have numbers.

sluggish doing what?

It will be far slower booting but once you get to the desktop it should be fine. If the controller is doing a rebuild then it will be noticeably slower.
