disk errors

i want to copy some files from my old computer to my new one, because i cant get internet access on it yet.
im copying about 1.1 mb of stuff, but im having some trouble with the disk drive.

for one thing, when i open my computer, it lists the floppy drive as a "removable drive", and has the generic removable drive icon for it. when i double click it to open the contents of the disk, it says "The disk in drive A is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"
if i click yes, the format box opens, and lists the disk as having a capacity of 180k. the only options are quick format and copy system files only, and neither works. the drive is only about 2-3 years old, so i know compatibility isnt an option. ive tried several disks, and i know all are the standard 1.44mb type.

i tried a second floppy drive (teac) that i purchased about a month ago from best buy, still no dice.

note: it gives the format message on both drives even when there isnt a disk in the drive.
