disk drive error on notebook part II

Last year I fixed a notebook of a friend with your help, guys (see this thread). Now the notebook returned, more evil than before. 🙁

The drive seems to be installed correctly. It is displayed correctly in hardware manager and there seem to be no resource conflicts. If you try to read a disk you get an error telling you the disk is not formatted. If you try to format the disk, it says you cannot use quick format. If you disable quick format it says the disk could not be formatted. What the hell is going on?

I uninstalled the drive as windows help suggested, but same behaviour afterwards. What can I do?

I don' t know what happened to the notebook. I was told that someone else installed a different operating system on it six month ago and since this time the disk drive doesn' t work correctly. I think they installed Windows 98 and after the problem occured they switched back to Windows 2000.🙁
