dishwasher question

Do dishwashers have some kind of "waste bin" where all the food particles go (for us to empty manually) or does it go down the same drain the water leaves at ?

The ones I've seen drain into the sink drain. The three I have owned all drained into the disposer side.

I think it goes down the drain .. at least mine does. I've been searching for a "waste bin" but haven't found one. I do know there is a mesh like filter on the bottom where the water drains at .. it needs cleaned off every now and then. I usually just rinse the dishes off really well before they go in the dishwasher.

maytag ones are supposingly have a grinder built-in so it won't clot up drainline, not sure if other brand of dishwashers have this feature.

Our 16 year old Kitchenaid has a course screen to catch any broken glass, or other items that might harm the impeller. That must be emptied manually. Everything else goes into the sink's drain, above the trap.

My Kenmore has this as well.
