Signed up for the Turbo HD bronze package in January for $24.99/month
In February, they raised our monthly package rate to $29.99/month
Called and argued with 3 different people about it. They told me it's in their contract that they have the right to change the price whenever they want. I told her that the very point of a contract with a service company is to lock our rate in for the specified length of the contract. What's to stop them from raising the package rate to $5000/month and remove all but one channel.
Last retard I spoke with told me all companies raise service rates in contracts including cell phone companies. After bitching her out for awhile she agreed to give me a $5 credit for 12 months (not the best solution but will tide me over till their next increase next February).

I guess I'm just venting here and letting people know since I've seen some threads where people were going to be signing up for satellite service.

Ya, seems like if you sign a service contract, you should be locked into a certain price. However, there may be some fine print in the contract that allows you to get out of it if a price increase occurs. Might be worth requesting/reading your contract to see what options you have, should you choose to act on it.

I did have to wait on hold for another 15 minutes to get someone from corporate. He said he's going to send me a copy of the contract. I want to compare it to the copy of the order sheet I signed.

Heh the 'credit' probably isn't going to show up next month and you're going to have to call them to fix it. They're just hoping you forget the month after that and so on.

bah! I never even thought of that lol. Oh well, my wife is a stay at home mom so she can call them up every time. I wonder if they'd drop me from my contract if I'm verbally "abusive" to the CSR.

If you need a referral to sign up for DirecTV, let me know. We'll both get $100 credit on our bills (used to be $50, now it's $100 I think).

OP, just a warning ...

While I like DirecTV, they are expensive. I have their lower-tier service with TIVO and pay about $60 a month. The next rate increase will probably be the last for us. While we enjoy the service their prices have risen disproportionately with what we actually get. Check them out first before you try them.

Thanks for the info. We're honestly contemplating going with rabbit ears + hulu type websites. We're not huge tv watchers which is why we went with the cheapest HD package dish had.

If I could find a source of download-able 1080p quality cable content, I'd probably do the same thing. We don't watch a lot of TV but what we do watch we like a lot and want to take advantage of our 65" DLP. Also, most of the shows we watch are on cable channels (discovery mostly). Currently we have DirecTV and pay about $75/month

Yup, I never got my credits on the first try and it was always an argument to ever get them on the 2nd or 3rd.

Satellite contracts have become long and predatory.

You pay for but dont own equipment.

They raise rates whenever.

They change the contract whenever.

And there is nothing you can do about it.

"won't matter. it has small print saying "we have the right to change the contract at any time" or something like that. "

Effin stupid then...So basically the contract guarantees them anything they want and doesn't guarantee you jack squat.....

I was going to go with satellite but from some of the horror stories I read I might just call the cable company and see if I can renegotiate my bill....

Doesn't really matter, you'll get the same thing from them...

Yeah, but when a cell phone company does it, it lets you get out of contract for free, without paying that 175$+ fee for early termination.

Doubt it's the same with dish...granted I have had dish for 4 years now.

There is a reason why dish lost 94,000 customers , while directv gained 460,000 customers.
I got really upset with how dish sells its packages. I was a long time customer at the time when they introduced the turbohd packages. I wanted to switch to just those packages and was told the packages were only for new subscribers. I had to pay for SD and HD just to get HD. I canceled and even though I was no longer under contract they wanted to charge me a cancellation fee of $200. They billed my card for it and I got the bank to do a charge back. After I did that they charged another card for the amount, my fathers !.

My dad did not have the full amount on his credit limit. So dish started charging $5, then $10, then $100 and kept charging little amounts till they maxed out my dads card. All total there were 20 some charges in one day from Dish.
I was furious and called dish. They said that they had the right to charge any card that had ever been used for anything on the account. My dad had paid the bill one month with his credit card. His name was nowhere on the account.
I had to contact the BBB and Dish corporate to get it straightened out.

Meh, I went with my phone company. I get internet, phone, and Dish (Silver 200/HD/DVR/2 Room) for $95 + Tax. They are also giving me a free 8gb ipod touch.
