I have one HD TV and one SD TV that I want to get satellite for. The only necessary obscure channel is Speed, most everything else we watch is fairly standard.

Which one is currently offering better deals? Has anyone else researched this lately?

Dish will be, IIRC, $40 a month for the silver package (bronze is $30 but doesn't have Speed) if you are a new subscriber. $200 for the HD DVR, that should be all. Then the nickel and dime stuff :mad;

The VIP 622 receiver does HD out for TV one and SD out for TV2. So you only need one receiver.

Dish has better equipment, better promotions, and far more HD stations. It also has every major sports package with the exception of the NFL Sunday Ticket.

The only compelling reason to go with Direct IMHO is the NFL exclusivity if you require that.

Also - Dish gets it's music from Sirius, Direct from XM if that matters.
