Dish Network ViP 722 HDDVR Question

I'm currently a subscriber with Dish and have one of their ViP 722 HD DVRs. I'm filling it up pretty quickly and would like to transfer some of the recordings to my PC were I have a lot more storage.

I know I can connect the USB HD to the DVR and transfer files from the DVR to the hard drive but would I be able to then download those files from the external hard drive to my computer?

I looked this up at Dish Network site and the FAQ is vague, saying some files cannot be transferred to the external hard drive but says nothing about whether I can download transferred files to my computer from the external hard drive. Can anyone confirm this?

The drive is encrypted and specially formatted once you hook it up to the 722 receiver. You will not be able to transfer any recordings from the drive to your PC. FYI there is also a one time fee of $39.95 to enable this feature.
