Parents have an OLD DirecTV system (2 SD Recievers - roughly 6 years old)

They called to inquire about an upgrade to a new HD system (HD DVR Receiver, new SD box, new Dish) and was basically given no discounts. They called back, asked for retentions (as mentioned in the other thread) and tried another 3 times, no luck. DirecTV is being quite the asshole and won't give any decent discounts (he said he could do the HD DVR for $149 instead of $199 - woop de freakin do)

So now were thinking about moving them to Dish Network.

Free HD DVR (VIP 722 - for two rooms, 1 HD, 1 SD)
Free Dish
Free Install
Free HD Programming for 6 months ($20 credit per month for 6 months)

Are those of you dish network customers generally happy with the service? My parents don't need a ton of HD (that DirecTV keeps touting), but they would mainly just like the standard locals as well as a few others (though CNN HD would be nice - only on DirecTV for now i suppose)

I prefer dishnetwork over direct. had both at one time or another for a couple years apiece. The software isn't quite as good as directTV's but it is still good. DirectTV will call you after you they switch to dish network asking for them to return and a good discount so don't sign a long contract

Ive had dish network for about 3 years now. For the most part, Ive been extremly happy with the service. I dont have the hd service yet, but with the recent additions, direct tv now has more hd channels than dish network, though dish can/will add those channels at some point (plus dish network has 15 voom channels no one else has). I hear the dvr software is much better on dish network than direct tv.

I have the newer HD DVR (the 722 aphex mentioned in his OP). It's a good upgrade from our older Dish SD DVR, the software is pretty decent now.

As for the Voom channels...I think Rave is on that list. It's nothing but concerts 24/7, and it's probably been our most watched station since we got the new receiver 3 or 4 weeks ago.

I have Dish. When I called to see about upgrading to the newest HD DVR, they offered me nothing. Same thing your parents were offered from Direct.
So in the future, if they want to upgrade with Dish, they'll probably get the same service. Nothing.
