I'm considering changing over to Dish Network from DirecTV so that I can get a free 2-3 room system. There's a current promotion that allows a new customer to get a 2-room system plus a DVR, but the DVR is not a name brand (tivo, etc.) as far as I can tell.

Anyone have experience with this thing?

Anyone know of a better forum to ask satellite-related questions in?

I think JVC makes most (if not all) of Dish's PVRs. I've got the 508 model and love it. It lacks some of the personlization features of Tivo (like Season Pass) but then again I'm not having to pay a monthly fee for that service and still get all the basic pause/rewind functionalith which is 90% of the selling point for me personally anyway. I think Dish is now going to start charging a monthly service charge like Tivo for all newer PVRs so I'm assuming they'll probably add some more advanced personalization features down the road to justify it against DirecTV and Tivo.

100 hours recording time on the 510 (501's and 508's don't have the monthly charge, $5 for the 510 and anything else) vs 40(?) on the DirecTivo. I think it's justified.
