DISH NETWORK AND DIRECTV... DO THEY USE THE SAME ...

Do they use the same type of dish and lnb ?

I'm wondering because, I want to switch to directv but I dont want them drilling another hole in my roof for another satellite. If they can just reposition the satellite and switch out the lnb, then i'll definitely jump to directv..

Anyone have tried both ?

Most likely, you will have to have additional holes drilled. Even if they used the same hardware to attach the dishes in the past, both companies are always developing bigger and better ideas which often involve new hardware designs. However, DirecTV will come out to your house and take a look for free. If you decide that you do not want it then all you have to do is tell the installer that you are not interested and call DirecTV to tell them that you don't want the service. You do not have to sign any contracts until after the installation takes place so yuo are safe.

I'm using my DirecTV dish and LNB for Dishnet right now. Only thing is, for Dishnet I had to get an additional LNB and a bracket made specially for holding the other LNB at the proper angle (Dishnet feed comes from 2 satellites, Echostar 110 and 119, thus 2 LNBs).

edit: the only dish service that I know of that uses different LNBs is Starchoice, which is Canadian. AFAIK Dish & Direct both use standard LNBs.

Well I currently have 2 sat dishes mounted on the roof.

65.5 119/110

If I switch to DirecTV.. would they be able to just use the Dish Network Dish and not mount another dish on my roof and just swap out the lnb ?

So then it's only a matter of swapping out the receivers ? for the most part..

There is a difference between whether they "can" do something and whether they are "willing" to do something due to company policies. You can ask, but I doubt they will permit what you are asking.

swapping receivers, repointing dish and BAM

like Xavier said though, you know how companies are with hardware that isn't provided by them (ie. when they aren't making hand over fist selling you a $20 dish for $50).

Not to mention that you would be tampering with their equipment that they loaned to you if you decided to do it yourself. You don't own it. That is asking for trouble. It's up to you, but I don't think that the ends justify the means considering the reason why you want to do this.

Ill call up directv once i get my hdtv and see what they say.

if all else, I can go with time warner cable... they rape in charges tho 🙁.

As far as not owning it, just depends. My original DTV install was 4 years ago....just upgraded to the new 5LMB dish and two rooms of HD. CSR told me that I had had the original equipment so long that I did indeed own it....so when the installer arrived a couple of weeks ago, he promptly put the old dish and old receiver in my store house, where I asked they be placed. No problems, no questions.

Now for the real answer😀

If you only go standard def with DTV they "should" be able to pull the 110/119 (Dish 500) and swap it with a Phase 3 (Or Single depending on your location), they may have to rerun some of the cable but the holes in the roof shouldn't need to change. On the other hand, If you go High Def you will have to get a totally different dish/mount (The 5 LNB uses a 2" base with 2 additional support arms rather than the 1 5/8" standard base)
