If this is a repost blame the original poster. I did a search for 'Dish' and 'DVR' and didn't see anything on it.

It looks like they're FINALLY getting around to upgrading most of their units to name-based recording like Tivo. It also sounds like they'll be rolling out some sort of 'Season' Pass'-like feature as well.

Ugly site, but good info in it and links to some discussions and a Dish PDF on it.

One of the main discussion threads on it

I have no doubts it'll probably be buggy as hell at first, but hopefully it'll be a step closer to having a few of the nice Tivo funtions it's missing currently (the only two I really want that I don't have are 'Season Pass' and the 'Keep at most X episodes of this show' feature.)

At least now they can somewhat justify charging a monthly fee similar to Tivo. Fortunately I have an old PVR 508 which is exempt from the fee (and hopefully will still get these upgrades for free.) :)

I would assume they'll just upgrade the software automatically judging by this quote halfway down the page on the first link:

"501, 508, 510 TO GET NAME BASED RECORDING - NO PLANS TO UPGRADE 721 and 921 DVR's TO DO NBR!!!

At this time, there are no plans to upgrade 721 or 921 receivers with Name Based recording. This feature will be implemented in 522 and all DVR receivers going forward. However, on the last Consumer Charlie Chat it was announced that the 501, 508, 510 receivers would receive NBR in February. "

EDIT: A thread in that forum conflicts with that and says that only the 522 and any upcoming DVRs will be getting this feature. I sure hope not. :( The vast majority of their subscribers probably are on other DVRs besides the 522. It would seem to make sense to throw people a bone given the upcoming price increases.
