my discover data was stolen at the end of may while I was moving, so didnt notice till start of june, someone ran amok with it. Just got a new card. It was weird too, only online purchases. and with that card I have only shopped at big retailers, ie amazon, newegg.

I have received two Discover cards at my parent's house (my permanent address) in the past few months. Like you, my current one expires in 2012. I had my parents destroy the two "new" ones.

Yes my wife got a new one with some literature about why it was a new #... it's to detect fraud earlier and also now offers concierge service. Score.

I called Discover a few weeks ago because of some address issues (I had just moved).

The representative told me that Discover was issuing me a new card number because they were offering a new concierge service or some crap like that. I never asked for it, they just were automatically "upgrading" the account.

I also received a notice in the mail that they were doing this, and that they would attempt to transition all payments to my new card number. Also, it said the old card would stop working after awhile.

My monthly statement shows the balance transfer from the old card number to the new card number.

For those who threw away your new cards...you had better check and make sure that the old ones are still active and will remain that way.

I don't know what the heck this is really about. I wonder if a laptop with my card number was stolen or something.

All Discover card users got the same treatment. The old numbers are being phased out and new numbers will replace them. Their explanations don't really tell you why they can't upgrade their service with old numbers.
