Well, a little over a month ago I had my PSU die horribly and take out my HDD and Mobo with it. I needed to recover some of the info and thought I could pehaps just swap the PCB with an identical drive as outlined in this thread and this one.

Long story short, thanks in large part to AT user vailr, who I am happy say more than lived up to his word, and shipped me a replacement in original retail packaging. I am now up and running. When I got a torx head bit and took off the old PCB, I found 2 of the IC's were completely fried. After swapping the PCB's, everything works perfectly.

Total cost to me: $40 USD or $60 CAN, versus minimum $500 canadian to take it to a data recovery place. Plus, my wife now thinks I'm a hero (it was mostly work stuff of hers that led to the need for data recovery), and she says I deserve a new video card. Woohoo!

Well no. Budget and all. I'm still a bit freaked out myself at the idea of spending as much on a video card as on a complete computer.

I tend to stay at least one or 2 generations back. That way, I don't even miss what I don't have, and when I do upgrade, it's just as new to me as it would have been to most AT users 1-2 years ago. I'm probably looking at a 8500 or maybe a 9500pro if one of the 2 interviews I had last week turns into a job.

Good thinks comes in threes. Drive, job, and 9500 Pro. :)
