Question Discord app. How to only receive messages from friends and not the server in the discord app?

I have a friend that's too cheap to get a phone. He uses discord or facebook to communicate. I don't use facebook so I created a discord account. With the android app I can't figure out how to only get alerts from him and not the server. I keep getting server alerts and it's annoying since I hate cell phones and rarely use it.
