We are about to move house and need to disconnect the gas dryer and gas stove to take them with us.

I have never done this before......whats involved?

I assume I need shut off valves and caps.....is this something a novice could do?

The moving company are offering to do it for an extra $100....but I really don't want to pay them any more.

Your gas lines probably have shut off valves where the appliance is connected. There may also be valves further upstream.

Turn off hte valves, disconnect the appliances, check for leaks from the lines by using the leak detector stuff you can buy at homedepot...its basically just a glycerin solution that will bubble if there is any leak.

If you appliance has the flexible gas line, besure not to crimp it. Also, sometimes those need to be replace before you hook them back up.

for more learning for the novice, go to a hardware store and ask, most of the time you'll get someone knowlegeble enough to explain how/what to do.
