I have a laptop battery that shows full all the time but can only be use for like 20 min.

According to some web sites, i need to fully discharge it and charge it again to refresh it somehow.

Now the question is how do i discharge a battery...safely

Tried starting the laptop after it shuts down, but it would only go as far as post then turn itself off again. The battery still show full...

Uh...you unplug the laptop when it is full, and when it dies, you plug it in, turn it on, and wait for it to fully charge again.

Laptop batteries die over time, how long have you had it?

Yep. Laptop batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time. If the battery is a few years old, or has been used heavily, just get a replacement battery.

Thats the thing, it is not heavly used at all.

my multimeter still detech it as 11.1 v, which is just right and light indicated have 75% full right now

could it be some sort of "data cable shortage on the battery?

the batty have 5 connectors -, T,D,C,+

You may need to use a software to recalibrate the battery charger circuit. Drain the battery, recalibrate, and recharge.

Hi, I assume that's a 12 volt battery you are talking about. If so 11.1 volts is practically dead. It should be above 12 volts when it's charged. If you want to know the exact voltage when charged, let me know and I will dig out the specs and let you know. 11.1 volts probably means that one cell is dead and the other 5 are full charged. Hope this helps, Jim

The battery is bad. Discharging the battery is not going to help. That's an old school fix for Nicad batteries. Modern Liion batteries don't have a memory.

You need to buy a new battery. Laptop batteries only last from between 2 - 4 years. They also have a limited shelf life. I've also seen batteries only last 1 year.

The battery is suppose to be 11.1v for a MVA-6690

if i charge it to 100% it would work for like 30min

as soon as it hit 67% or so it would start beeping like battery low then after a while it would shut itself down...

Yeah, that's usually what happens with dying Lithium-Ion batteries. Whether or not you've abused it, if it's been three years or near that, you're pretty much screwed. Li-Ion batteries have a hard usable lifetime limit of around three years, even if they're just sitting on the shelf the entire time. If it's only been one or two years, you've abused it without knowing it.. sorry.

side note to FlyingPenguin: only sintered-plate NiCd batteries exhibit the memory effect, and that's never been seen in consumer environments. The problem you're referring to is actually called voltage depression. It's not really a big deal what you call it, but everyone has the things they like to rant about, and that's one of mine.
