Discarding old monitors

I have an old 17in CRT Monitor, it went bad so I bought another one. I was wondering if anyone knew of places that would take old broken monitors. Either to recycle or someplace that would take it for parts. I live a hour away from pittsburgh, but even if you know of a company I can search for them in the area

I would still recycle it, but I doubt you would get into trouble for just dumping it in the bin.

If it's only 3-4 years old I would try selling it really cheap for parts etc.

I'd try to recycle it... check out what this website sez...

# According to the U.S. EPA, over 20 million personal computers became obsolete in 1998 and only 13% were reused or recycled.

# Electronic circuit boards, batteries, and color cathode ray tubes (CRTs) can contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium. If improperly handled or disposed, these toxins can be released into the environment through landfill leachate or incinerator ash.

# In just one year, over 112 million pounds of valuable materials were recovered from disposed electronics for recycling and reuse. Materials includes steel, glass, plastic and precious metals

3-4 years since you've had it or 3-4 years since it has been manufactured. Check the date on the label for this.

..this is turning into a big problem..I see old monitors and computers dumped on sidewalks and street corners by midnight dumpers. I recall seeing a doc.from Japan that showed how the Japanese completly recycle old comp./cell phones/plastics etc.they actually chip the old cell phones and computers then melt the chipped electronics and seperate the semi precious metals and gold..the program pays for it self..
