Disc in RAID1 failure - how to?

I have two discs setup in RAID1 on a 2-channel PCI card - no diagnostic utilities followed the card, how do I know if 1 of my discs stops working?!

ASUS P4S533, P4 1.6@2.38 , 2x256mb Samsung DDR2700, Point of View Geforce4 ti4200 (128mb),Maxtor 60gb on primary IDE, SB Audigy, DVD , LiteOn 24x CDR.
 
What kind of card do you have? I used to have a Promise card and at boot up it checked for both HDDs in the RAID. When one went down it told me then.
