disc golf. Any tips on equipment, technique, strategy etc?

Lots and lots of marijuana....

No, actually, there are regulation sized discs that you should get used to.
Work on the long loft floats and more importantly your short game.

how soon is the match???

well, really it doesn't matter... just go play every day until then if you want to even have a chance at beating them. you've gotta have a fair amount of practice to be able to throw a disc consistently, not to mention far enough to keep up with people who've been playing for a while.

I am beginning as well and was looking for disc suggestions for a beginner. I have only been using a mid driver (didnt know any better).
Thanks.

Don't get caught up in a lot of different disk types. Just grab a decent mid range that you are comfortable with and that is a color that won't get lost easily (try bright orange) and just use that for now until you get your technique down.

I've used the same mid range for going on three years now and I can par most of the "pro" holes using just that if they aren't 700ft monster holes. I don't have a lot of range, but I make up for it in finess.

You can maybe get a putter for the funky down hill putts or for shots you don't want the disk running away from you. The putters don't have the tendency to go sideways and roll 50 yards away. Nice for those little approach shots or long puts on awkward angles.

For style, I usually throw sidearm to tee off, then switch over to a more forward "flip" for the approach. From there it's and easy chip in for most holes.

The discs that I carry as "essentials" are as follows:

1. Lightning Pro D-1 - Driver - The distance I get out of this is phenomenal! If I had to play only one, this would be it. Flies straight and long and even works well as a putter.
2. Innova Shark - Midrange
3. Discraft Soft Pro D - Putter

The truth is, I could even do without the putter, if I had to. There are many times when I just put with my Lightning driver, because it has a straighter flight. If you miss, though, it doesn't drop as quickly.

Some extras that I carry because I like them in different situations:
Innova Archangel - Good beginner driver. Also rolls nice if you're in the wood and that's your only option.
Innova Firebird - My driver of choice on really windy days
Innova Roc - The disc I use for sidearm and hammer (overhand) shots. Very durable, too.

Oh, and a quick strategy tip that will probably save you 1-3 shots per hole. When you are learning, just lay your putts up as close to the basket as possible. If you are 20 yards out, don't go for it every time, because you will usually overshoot and end up too far away to make your next shot.

Spend some time out on the course when you aren't competing and practice with both a lay-up putt and a go-for-it putt.

Here you go:

Course directory.

Was a great weekend here in the NW and perfect weather for some disc golf. Even scored some new discs from a fellow selling in the parking lot 😀. Thanks Mr N8 for the suggestions. 🙂

No problem, I love helping new players. If you're ever in SE Wisconsin, let me know. 😉

I use that course directory every time I take a trip anywhere. I've gone as much as 20 miles out of my way on trips, just to stop at a Disc Golf course to play it. 😀

My dumbass neighbor set up a mini course in his back yard. even went so far as to survey out the property, but he ended up putting two baskets in our yard. I filled them with leaves the first time (the good smelly rotten stuff) and just took em down the next time after he didn't get the first hint.

That was the mature way to take care of the problem, instead of doing something juvenile like talking to him and explaining his cages were on your yard.

Just ignore him, compared to his other posts, this was polite.

Get over it.

Of course, this is the country that thinks watching poker is a good thing, so whatever.

Shouldnt you be listening to nine inch nails and cutting yourself?

😉
Its all relative.

Bright colors are good. One of my Lightning drivers is dark green with a yellow/green swirl in it. I'm not sure why anyone would make a long-range driver that matches grass. 😕

Funny story, yesterday, we were just about done (hole 16) and saw a brand new frisbee half way up a big bush tree. We were about to throw sticks to knock it down and then we noticed what was right next to it. A huge bee hive the size of a basketball......Talk about a hazard....
