Can anyone recommend a good disc defrag utility, maybe a multi-purpose one that cleans the registry as well. Thanks for any input you can provide. Every time I use the Microsoft one it hangs up at 9% and won't go any further.

The MS safety scanner does a registry cleanup if you run the full-service scan. link It'll also defrag if you have enough fragmentation; otherwise you can run defrag manually.
 
Raxco Perfect-Disk v8 is a very reliable defreg utility & is MS-certified for Vista & XP... its not free either but works very well.
