Disc brakes squealing on 2008 Jetta

My Jetta has disc brakes on all four wheels. When I first start driving I can hear the brakes squeal. It seems like as I keep using them on a single drive the squeal will eventually disappear. Is it possible the squealing is due to the brakes not being warmed up enough?

The pads and discs are probably not bedded in properly.

Check the net for some bedding in procedures.

I found various procedures ranging from doing several hard stops, to accelerating while riding the brakes, to doing nothing at all. What do you suggest?

Also, I looked at another car with disc brakes that is about a year old. The rotors were shiny and dark, does that indicate that they are coated with brake pad material and bedded in? Mine are not shiny.

Sounds like typical german break dust squeal. Are your wheels getting dusty? My Audi gets squeally after about three to four weeks of driving and once I hose out the wheels from the break dust the squeal goes away for another month or so.

I've only had it once when I replaced pads without turning the rotors. The result was a squeel that finally went away by itself after about 10k miles (yes, 10,000). It wasn't that loud, though; brakes will bed themselves. I'd just put up with it, unless the hose trick mentioned above works.

I had this problem on my X5 but it went away completely after the 1st month. Just normal car washes, didn't do anything special on cleaning the discs/pads, etc.

They are somewhat dusty. I just wonder why the squeal is there at the beginning of a trip but disappears after a couple of stops. Is that how it is for you also?

Mine squeaks every morning when I just start to drive. After a couple of stops, it stops squealing completely.

I have an 07 Jetta GLi

Depends

If i'm hard on the breaks I stop squeaking... sorta cleans itself out by blowing the dust off the rotors I guess. If it's just a sunday drive, I'm queaky all day. I have replaced the stock Audi pads which were exceptionally squeaky (drove me nuts) with ceramic reds and the squeal has reduced quite a bit.

Some of those high performance pads, which are common Euro vehicles, are prone to make some noise. But it's worth the trade-off in noise as the braking power (especially fade resistance) is outstanding on these vehicles. I would try bedding in the pads, but chances are you'll just have to live with it.

on the first startup of the day, while in reverse my breaks squeel. Then after nothing more all day long, is this the norm? I own a mazda protege 03.'

not trying to thread jack, just wondering whats up

Hey I have an update on this. When I first made this thread, the car had probably 1500 miles on it or less. The problem seemed to disappear after about 5000 miles but it got worse before it got better. It would squeak almost all the time. It now only happens for the first stop or two and then it's fine.

This is normal for VW pads, I have the same thing on my GTI after 8k miles. I talked to a VW master tech at the dealer and according to him it was because of the high performance pads VW uses on their breaks. They will squeak when cold but once they warm up it should go away.
