Ever since they aired the episode of Mythbusters on Discovery where they proved that you will test positive for opium after eating poppy seed muffins/bagels those tasty bastards have been hard to find at the grocery store.
:(

Have they been banned?

Which is why drug tests are repeated to disprove false positives.

Is it really a false positive when the drug *is* in your system, albeit not from the use they suspect? I mean in these cases, the drug test is doing exactly what it is designed to do, the problem is that eating poppy seeds puts the same chemicals in your system as using heroin. In these situations, the drug test is right, the conclusions drawn from the results could be incorrect, however.

Also when they do the "retest" don't they use the same sample from the original piss test? So regardless it is not a "false positive" (which would mean a problem with the test), it is finding the chemical in the pee. It's not going to all the sudden disappear (if they do use the same pee).

Usually the tests test for drug families. The simple tests can't tell the difference, there are tests & labs that can tell the difference.

My dad tested positive for meth during mandatory testing after an accident at work. After his boss stood up for him they sent the tests to another (much more expensive) lab. That lab came back positive for the same family of drugs as the cheap test, but identified the source as OTC allergy/sinus medication (pseudophedrine = Sudafed).

Beat me to it :)

I would say that there are more chemicals in your body than just the stuff that is in poppy seeds. If you tested positive and didn't look like an opium freak im sure they could test for any other trace chemicals to prove/disprove it.

Im sure the test is designed around being cheap and easy, therefore if you had a problem you could do a more expensive test that checked for other chemicals.

The real problem is that once you test positive even if it's a false positive you are often guilty until proven innocent. In a pre-employment screening you won't be called back or re-tested. Most places use the cheapest testing method available and because it's cheap it doesn't determine source.

Welcome to america, where we wage a war we can't win against victims of addicition and accuse people of that same condition for eating common items and deny them employment.

I get an assortment of muffins every week from my grocery store. I always get at least one lemon poppyseed muffin. The standard ones that they make all year are lemon poppyseed, double chocolate, and wild berry.

Scary, people have a (future) job because they had a bagel on their way to an interview.

I make a point to eat a poppy seed bagel before I have to take a drug test as part of a job application. I figure if they are too cheap to pay for real drug testing they aren't a place I care to work for anyway. :p

And I have no problem buying those tasty poppyseed covered bagels either. :)
