After reading about new iPhone 3G articles last night I decided to call ATT reps to find out about data only plan becauase I am hearing impaired I wont be needing voice plan but the reps said that 40.00 for data only with unlimited internet and I asked about AOL Yahoo and MSN instant messengers and SMS (text) and email she said that if I want those I would have to use voice plan for an additional 40.00 I asked why would I have to pay 40 if I dont use voice at all she said that apple made a deal with att requiring people to include both data and voice plan if they want iphone because iphone is a cell phone...I dont want to pay 80.00 for both plans....I feel that Steve Jobs doesnt give a damn about hearing impaired people I wouldnt care if Steve Jobs ever read this message.

It's all about profit man, sorry to hear. But is it seriously $80 for the lowest voice plan and unlimited data? Seems kinda steep.

That sucks but it is a cool toy so you have to put up with odd restrictions. Heck I have no desire for a data plan (opposite of your problem) but they don't seem to care about me either.

Hold out hope for Android. If several good phones come out using it perhaps something will come along which suits your needs better.

Sounds like the rep may have given you bad information, I would imagine it wouldn't change much from the old plan (just possibly $10 more than it was previously). And it wouldn't make sense for the rep to tell you its extra to use AOL/MSN because its all data to the phone and would be included, not to mention the fact that the phone has neither client built in right now and will need to be added from the app store. I think you got a bad rep. Call back in a few weeks and check, they might just not have any good info yet since it was just announced.

It's not surprising that the hearing impaired also want to share in the iPhone experience, but until recently they had to sign up for the same voice plans as everyone else. Now, however, AT&T is introducing the $40/month Text Accessibility Plan which offers:

*Unlimited SMS messages
*Unlimited data usage (email and web)
*$.40 per minute pay-per-use voice
*Visual VoiceMail

To qualify you have to complete "the disability certification forms" found here (download link). New users activate their iPhones in the normal way through iTunes and then have to contact AT&T's National Center for Customers with Disabilities to change over the Text Accessibility Plan.
