Disappointed about my job -- need advice

I just got hired by Staples a couple weeks ago. I started actually working on the Sales Floor mid-December working about 13.5 hours a week. I worked on a fixed M-W-F schedule (5:00 - 9:30pm each night). Since Christmas and New Years were both on a Wednesday, I only worked for like 8 hours during the 2 vacation weeks. They also cut my working hours down to 5:30 - 9:30 during those 2 weeks.

January started and my first full week (this past week), I worked 12 hours (5:30 - 9:30pm each night for M-W-F). I check my schedule for next week and find out that I'm only working Wednesday and Friday, also from 5:30 - 9:30pm each night).

What annoys me is that, the store closes at 9 and usually everyone leaves by 9:10. I'm very disappointed that my hours went from 13.5 > 12 > 8. I could understand them cutting me back some hours due to the New Year and sales slowing down...but I'm like very disappointed.

Tommorow, I plan on calling my boss (hopefully we'll be working tommorow) and asking him on why my hours got cut and possibly request more hours. I originally wanted to ask for maybe 5 more hours (or 1 more worknight) before this cutting down crap started. I feel like I'm getting phased out of the company already. 🙁

I can't find another one. 🙁 I'm only 17 and it took me 3 months to finally get this job.

I have a feeling this problem might tie-in with the fact that I suck at selling warrenties (I'm new, what'd they expect?). I'm just about to go make another ATOT thread asking former/current sales associates on tips and advice on how to sell warrenties. 🙁

If they give you more hours, they have to cut somebody elses hours. Are you a standup guy, or are you a prick who would rather see somebody else get their hours cut?

Quit whining 😛 I've worked at a local target since it opened almost two years ago, and even I catch cr@p like that. This year I went from 25-30 hours a week around Christmas to 10 hours the week of New Years to five hours - one lousy shift - this week. Seniority doesn't get me anywhere. Everything should level out again in a week or two, and you'll have more hours again. Just ride it out.

That is most certainly not his concern and his hours got cut first! He had his hours... then they were taken away.

where i work, we all expect hours to be cut in january till about march.
During xmas when sales are up, they have to and can afford to give ppl more hours. But after xmas, sales are down, and they probably can't afford to be giving every single employee as many hours as they want.

My current dillemas now is to decide whether it is worth it to call in or ride it out. My 2nd dillema is that if I do call and complain, how do I politely inquire about my situation to upper management. Surely I'm not gonna yell and complain. I'm just a little confused as to how I am going to question upper management's decisions.

I hate work, i basically hate my day to day life.
i am this close to selling my car, selling my computers, quitting my job, and using the money from selling my stuff to go to australia for a while... blah to every day hustle and bustle.. SUCKS.....

Bye.

Dont bring it up to your manager... Staffing at places like that are usually based on sales, so if sales go down, so do the hours. You could ask why hours are going down, but likely this is the reason. Thats retail.. .... nothing you can do about it. I have a second job at Home Depot and its like that there. The store closes at 10... and i used to work till 12. So don't complain about the 1`/2 hour!

I have worked at my walmart store 2+ years and they are cutting my hours right now. Usually work 30-35 and now I'm down to 18 in 3 6 hour shifts but it will go back up shortly.

Relax. I use to work in retailing. Hours always get cut after Christmas. I would not bring this up with the man or I can tell you that your hours will certainly be cut even more. If things have not gotten better by the spring then I would worry.

I am amazed at what I am reading from you the rest of you. What does "stand up guy" have to do with anything and does anyone really care what is happening at Target (besides the person that works there). Every company is different.

That is the problem everyone thinks that everyone owes them something or you have to have some super set of morals, etc... This is a business and if they need people and they have the money they will give more hours. If this is cyclical than maybe you will get more hours when business increases.

Here is the key: you do not owe anyone anything and they do not owe you anything ( I am not talking about legal items such as pay, etc..) Nobody is handcuffing you to this job. You should try to show some respect to others and hopefully they will show you some. No matter how nice a comany is when they have to cut the budget you are at risk of being laid off or having your hours cut and your employer also know that if somebody came to you and offered you a ton of money they are at risk of losing you.

What I would do is talk to my boss about this. Explain that you want more hours for more money. You do not (and should not) explain why you need the money. Nobdy cares about your big date on Saturday or that you are saving for a car or a 1000 inch monitor. Tell him/her that you want more hours. They will decide if they can give it to you, if they have the budget and the need for another worker. Your boss will also know that if anyone calls in sick or quits your can handle some/all of the hours.

If you boss cannot give you more hours (or enough) then work there and take what you can get and in the meantime look for another job to either replace this one or supplement your income. While I was in college I had the same problem with my boss. I was not working enough to make enough money. I kept that job during the week and unloaded trucks at a supermarket on the weekends. I ended up getting rid of that to bartend and then made enough bartending in two days that I quit the weekday office job to focus on my schoolwork. While you are searching for a job you may find it easy to get another job or it may be a nightmare. If the job market is that bad than be thankful you have a job (no matter how little the pay is) and hang in until times get better

What makes me an authority on this: I have been working for over 20 years and have had some of the best, worst, strangest jobs you can imagine. I have worked for some of the nicest people in the world and some of the biggest jerks you can imagine. I have worked for companies that were so small they only had a few employees and now I work for one of the largest companies in the world (approx 365,000 employees). I have been a waiter, bartender, manager of a restaurant, warehouse worker, clerk, manager of customer service, salesman, technical architect, systems analyst, IT consultant, technical trainer and approx a dozen other positions. Many of these positions were promotions from other positions I have listed. Some of these jobs where held simultanousely.

P.S. I did not mean to take it out on the person who works at Target. I happen to love that store. I feel it is so much better than the other superstores

Thanks for your comment TRCDROM. Although I value your opinion and agree with it, I think I'm gonna lay low for a while. My co-worker who has been working there for a year now (is 2nd best at selling warranties at the store), worked only 3 days last week and 5 days this week. He suggests that I just should lay low for now since everyone's schedule fluxuates.

I might be able to see why they don't need me on the Monday though. Monday is usually our day where we unpack cargo and stock it on the shelves. It's mindless work and not many customers flock to the story on a Monday so they don't need extra employees just standing around I guess... 😕

Uh...welcome to retail! January, February, and maybe even March are slow months for retail stores. I worked for Sears for three years, and the scheduled hours per week ALWAYS dropped to very low levels during those months. Heck, some of the employees even applied for partial unemployment one year!!! I don't know if they got it or not. I rememer I was able to take just about any days off I wanted to during those months.

Just an observation. Then again, they may not like you.............. Or it could be the fact that you can't spell warranty......... 😀 j/k

LOL actually my management likes me alot. They see me as someone who has alot of potential. They say I just need to get the warranty thing down. They see me working my butt off 45 minutes past 9pm (the latest someone under 18 can work until). Believe it or not, I can sell most of the things in the Business Machines department (I'm just weak in PDAs and Digital Cameras because I have no experience with them). I just can't friggin sell the warranties! LOL

That's cool. Just tell them to send you to "Warranty Selling School". Maybe that'd help.
I had to sell MA's (Maintenance Agreements) at Sears, aka Extended Warranties. I wasn't all that great at it, either. I didn't really believe in them, to begin with. And they were so expensive of some of the items that we sold. Some MAs were actually the same price or more than the actual piece of merchandise. Try selling that to some cheapskate! Not easy, actually imossible sometimes. But, there were times when I would get lucky and the customer would actually WANT the MA. I liked those transactions.

I think you are lucky to have a job. Plus you are in high school, no worries... just cut back on spending.

NOBODY can sell me a warranty. Well--maybe Nicole Kidman can . . .

You haven't worked long at the store, so one thing NOT to do is to be annoyingly persistent with the Man. You should politely inquire about the prospect of working more hours. If he or she doesn't give you an honest answer, I'd start looking for a second job.

You could also suggest to the boss to call you first when someone calls in sick. Spread the word among your co-workers that you'll cover their shifts if they need to take off work.

You've done some good things already--like working hard and checking that other employees have similar problems. I think best things to do are to establish your commitment to the company and to get trained to work in other departments also.

Good luck.
