Disappering Partitions

I just purchased a new Hitachi 250GB PATA hard drive, and I'm having a really strange issue.

I first formated it as 1 large partition, 232GB NTFS using partition magic.

I'm using the drive as a video storage drive for my HTPC..

two days go by of recording to the drive, and suddenly I can't access any files on it, the program i'm using to record to it, says the folder no longer exsists.

thinking that seemed really strange, maybe the program was acting up or something, i closed it out, then rebooted my system.

once the system was rebooted, and the program opened, it was still reporting the folder as missing. when I tried to navigate to the drive, it was asking me if i'd like to format it.. the drive was still being detected, but the partition was now it RAW format..

I was really pissed as I had now lost 2 days worth of recordings.. but it wasn't anything I couldn't live without.

Just to make sure the drive wasn't somehow failing, I downloaded and ran Hitachi Drive Fitness Test, which i'm sure most of you are familiar with.. it reported 0 problems with the drive. I also ran ChkDsk which also reported no problems with the drive.

I gave up on trying to recovery the lost data, and reformated the drive.. but this time, I made two 100GB NTFS partitions..

well, low and behold - 2 days later of recording, and the 1st partition which was created at the begining of the drive, has disappeared and is displaying as RAW. The weird thing is the 2nd partition is still fine, and I can read the data from it no problem..

has anyone experienced this before? is the program corrupting the partition or is this a sign of drive failure? it just seems really odd, as I've seen failing drives before and i've never seen any exhibit this behavior. on the other hand though, i've never heard of any program causing partition corruption.

any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated.
I purchased the drive via retail channels, and i'm still within the return policy.. just don't want to exchange it and have the same issue.

also, if anyone knows of any compatiblity issues with this drive and my setup, let me know:
