Disappearing Network

I've posted this problem on another site but figured I'd reach some different people so here goes.
I am currently having a problem with the pc's on our network being able to browse the network from either net neighborhood or explorer. They can however see any drive available using UNC. This is a problem that has started popping up over the last month. First one pc then another. Its strange in the fact that a pc can see the network one minute and then the next nothing. For the most part when it happens the first few times, the machine can be rebooted and browsing will be available again. Then as time goes on you may have to reboot 5 or 6 times before you can browse and then finally, nothing. No amount of rebooting will help.
Here is a breakdown of the setup of the network:
Fast ethernet with approximately 60 workstations on it, both pc and mac. The pc's are running either Win98 or Win95. Running two servers, a Dell 4400 w/ W2k and a DEC alpha 500 w/ NT4.0 (service pack 6 i believe but don't hold me to it.) Routing is being done on the Dell server for the time being due to a router death. Switches: Asante IntraStack carrying most of the workload with a Cisco 2900 and a 3Com (can't remember the model of the top of my head) picking up the rest. We're running TCP/IP and WINS is active with Netbios.
I've tried disabling WINS on one of the workstations experiencing the problem and it had no affect.

If anyone has seen this problem before, myself and a few others at windrivers would sure appreciate any input or solutions.
If you need anymore info, just ask. I'll be checking in off and on all day.

Thanks,
DW

So you do have WINS installed on your network? IT completely sounds like a WINS issue. There is a util to repair the WINS database, but I cannot remember the name of it. Also, you night have to re-install the latest service pack and also recreate the WINS database.

There are numerous problems with WINS and having two network cards. Can you explain exactly how each server is setup in terms of NICs/protocols/addresses?

Quick guess...did the problem start appearing somewhere around the time you made the dell do routing?

If it is a WINS issue, I can email you the two tools you will need. Or, if yo have either the Windows NT 4 or Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit CD, the tools are on there.

They are called WINS Adminitration Tool and WINS Check.
