Disappearing Mouse?

Alright, this one is a little hard to explain without being able to see it, so here it goes.

Once and a while, I'll go to open a program (MSN Explorer or Azureus) and my mouse just kind of... disappears. The image of the mouse pointer remains at one point on the screen. I can click and move around still, but I cannot see a visible pointer. Basically, the image of a pointer stays in one spot, but I have another invisible pointer that I cannot see, but is functional. I'm really at a loss on how to fix this, so I'm hoping you guys can help, because this is probably one of the most frustrating things I have ever experienced, as I have to restart each time this occurs.
 
What kind of mouse is it? Do you have driver software installed or are you just using the Windows drivers? Windows XP?
