Disappearing DVD-ROM drive

Hi all

I am running WinXP on an AMD system. For a long while, everything worked OK. Just recently (within the last week), my DVD drive will not appear in My Computer or the device manager, but it DOES show up during the POST (when it displays what devices are connected to which IDE port). So that eliminates the cable. I can eject a disc by pressing the button on the front of the drive, so that means it is getting power. Even if it were "bad', wouldn't it still show up in WinXP if it shows up in the POST? I doubt it can be bad, as it is not used heavily nor is it abused.

Any suggestions? Or do you need more info?

PS- TOSHIBA 16X dvd.

Have you checked in your Device Manager to see if the drive was accidentally disabled?

It is completely gone from the DM. I have also tried the Add New Hardware wizard, but it does not detect the drive when it scans.

Any other suggestions?? I'll try anything.

Did you install anything into your computer that required you to change jumpers?

Here is an additional tidbit:

I tried the Add New Hardware Wizard again today, and this time it detected something. However, instead of saying TOSHIBA DVD-ROM [model #], it said the following:

<< TOSHIBA` DVDmROM` SD-M1u0r >>

It's all garbled... what the hzck is going on?!?!
